Overview
The Garmin 010-12881-08 is an AMPS rugged cradle and hardwire cable kit for mounting a compatible Garmin Montana handheld GPS where you need it most, like a helm, console, or tender dashboard. The included lead gives you bare power wires plus audio and data connections, so you can run a clean install instead of relying on a loose charging cable.
On a boat this style of mount makes sense when you want your Montana secured and powered during wet runs, while still keeping it easy to grab when you step into the cockpit or go ashore. It is built for the Montana 700 series family (Montana 700, 700i, 710, 710i, 750i, and 760i) and is not meant for the older Montana 600 series cradles.
Key features
- Fits Garmin Montana 700 series handhelds: 700, 700i, 710, 710i, 750i, and 760i
- Hardwire cable with bare positive/negative power leads for a proper DC connection at the fuse block or breaker panel
- Audio connection via a 3.5 mm jack for routing sound to an AUX input or a small powered speaker at the helm
- Data wires available for installs that need them, without adding a separate harness
- Cradle-style mount that holds the unit steady in vibration-prone locations like center consoles and T-tops
- Mounting solution can be completed with an AMPS arm/ball socket (sold separately) to get the screen angle and reach right
- Not compatible with Garmin Montana 600 series devices and mounts
Installation and wiring
Plan the mount location so the Montana can be inserted and removed with one hand and the cable can be routed without sharp bends. For open boats, run the harness through a watertight cable gland and leave a drip loop before it enters the console to keep water from tracking inside.
Connect the power leads to a protected DC circuit sized for the device, and keep any splices or adapters in a dry area of the boat. If you are not using the audio or data lines, secure and isolate them so they cannot chafe or short against other wiring in the console.
On-board use
This mount is a good match for skiffs, RIBs, small center consoles, and sailboats that use a Montana as a portable navigator or as a backup GPS that can move between the helm and the dinghy. It also works well for anglers who want the screen up and powered while running between spots, then prefer to take the handheld with them on the dock.
