Overview
The Simrad 24006793 is an SG05 autopilot computer and gateway that interfaces Simrad AP24 or AP28 autopilot systems with Volvo Penta Electronic Vessel Control (EVC) and IPS drives. It bulkhead-mounts in a protected location and is powered from the SimNet network at 12 V, with two SimNet ports for system wiring.
The enclosure is IP44-rated and built from polyamide, with a typical power draw of about 0.9 W. Keep the unit at least 0.5 m from a magnetic compass, and mount it where it stays out of direct washdowns.
A built-in status LED flashes at 1 Hz when the unit is running, which helps with basic troubleshooting during install and service.
Key features
- Gateway and steering computer for integrating AP24/AP28 autopilot control with Volvo Penta EVC and IPS drive systems
- SimNet-powered at 12 V with a SimNet network load factor of 2
- Two SimNet ports for input/output on the autopilot network
- IP44 environmental protection for installation inside the boat, away from direct spray
- Bulkhead mounting with connectors oriented downward for cleaner cable routing
- Operating temperature range of 0 to +55 C for typical helm and electronics spaces
Compatibility and fit
This unit belongs in SimNet-based Simrad autopilot systems that use AP24 or AP28 control heads and need an interface to Volvo Penta EVC. On boats with Volvo IPS, it is used as the link between the Simrad autopilot network and the Volvo drive control side.
It is one part of a complete autopilot system. Plan for the required control head, heading sensor, SimNet cabling and termination, and the appropriate Volvo Penta autopilot interface connection for the vessel.
Installation and setup
Mount the SG05 on a bulkhead with the SimNet connectors facing downward, then tie it into the SimNet backbone using the correct cables and terminations. Power is supplied through the 12 V SimNet feed, so the network power drop and polarity need to be correct before commissioning.
The Volvo-side connection is made using the unit’s 1 m pigtail lead to the mating connector on the Volvo autopilot interface. After wiring, configuration and sea trial steps are completed from the autopilot control head.
Use on board
In operation, the SG05 passes steering and drive information between the Simrad autopilot and the Volvo control system so the autopilot can command the drives while still respecting the boat’s EVC environment. It suits powerboats that cruise or fish on autopilot in open water, where integration with the drive system matters as much as basic course keeping.
Maintenance and care
Periodically check that the unit stays firmly mounted and that the SimNet connectors remain clean, dry, and strain-relieved. In damp compartments, use drip loops and keep the connectors pointing down to reduce the chance of moisture tracking into the ports.
