The main difference is photo and voice messaging. The standard inReach Mini 3 handles satellite text communication, SOS, tracking, weather, and navigation support, while the inReach Mini 3 Plus adds longer text messages, photo sharing, 30-second voice messages, a built-in speaker, and a built-in microphone.

• 010-03387-20: Photo and Voice Messaging No. This is the standard inReach Mini 3 configuration for boaters who need compact satellite text messaging, SOS, tracking, and location sharing without photo or voice message support.
• 010-03387-30: Photo and Voice Messaging Yes. This is the inReach Mini 3 Plus configuration, adding photo sharing and 30-second voice messages when more detail needs to be sent from offshore, remote anchorages, or areas with no cellular service.

Installation and setup

This is a portable communicator rather than a fixed 12V or 24V marine electronics module, so it does not need to be wired into the boat’s electrical system. Charge it through USB-C before leaving the dock, then stow it where crew can reach it quickly, such as a grab bag, near the companionway, at the helm, or clipped to personal gear.

For best real-world use on a vessel, keep the communicator where it has a clear view of the sky when sending messages or sharing position. It should not be buried inside a metal locker, under heavy gear, or deep below deck when active satellite communication is needed.

Compatibility and system use

Satellite communication features require an active inReach satellite subscription. Messaging can be handled directly on the device with the touchscreen keyboard, or through a compatible smartphone using the Garmin Messenger app. Route planning and course support are handled through the Garmin Explore app.

Marine use and care
