Overview
The Garmin inReach Mini 3 is a compact SOS satellite communicator range for staying in contact from a boat when cellular service drops away. It uses the Iridium satellite network for off-grid messaging and includes an interactive SOS function that sends GPS coordinates to Garmin Response for 24/7 emergency coordination with an active satellite subscription.
This handheld communicator makes sense for coastal cruising, offshore passages, fishing runs, tender use, dinghy racing support, and any situation where a skipper wants a backup communication path that is not tied to VHF range or a mobile network. The 1.9-inch color touchscreen, IP67 water rating, MIL-STD-810 bare-unit rating, USB-C interface, and rechargeable internal lithium-ion battery make it practical to keep in a ditch bag, clipped near the helm, or carried by crew on deck.
Both versions support text messaging, LiveTrack and MapShare location sharing, Garmin weather, TracBack routing, Garmin Explore app use, Garmin Messenger app use, BLE wireless connectivity, and up to 350 hours of battery life with 10-minute inReach tracking. The Mini 3 Plus version adds photo and voice messaging for crews who need to send more context from beyond cellular coverage.
Key features
- Interactive SOS messaging sends GPS coordinates through the Iridium satellite network with an active satellite subscription.
- Color touchscreen measures 1.9 inches diagonally with a sunlight-readable transflective MIP display and 306 x 230 pixel resolution.
- IP67 water rating and MIL-STD-810 bare-unit rating help the device handle spray, rain, dust, shock, and changing temperatures on board.
- Rechargeable internal lithium-ion battery runs up to 350 hours with 10-minute inReach tracking.
- USB-C interface keeps charging simple from common onboard USB power sources or portable power banks.
- Multi-band GNSS support includes GPS, Galileo, QZSS, and BeiDou for position updates in open water, coastal areas, and remote locations.
- Garmin Explore app support adds trip planning, course following, satellite imagery, and hydrographic feature viewing through a paired smartphone.
- LiveTrack and MapShare let family, friends, or shore support follow progress during a passage when an active inReach subscription is in place.
Variants
This product is offered in two configurations within the inReach Mini 3 range.
The main difference is photo and voice messaging. The standard inReach Mini 3 handles satellite text communication, SOS, tracking, weather, and navigation support, while the inReach Mini 3 Plus adds longer text messages, photo sharing, 30-second voice messages, a built-in speaker, and a built-in microphone.
- 010-03387-20: Photo and Voice Messaging No. This is the standard inReach Mini 3 configuration for boaters who need compact satellite text messaging, SOS, tracking, and location sharing without photo or voice message support.
- 010-03387-30: Photo and Voice Messaging Yes. This is the inReach Mini 3 Plus configuration, adding photo sharing and 30-second voice messages when more detail needs to be sent from offshore, remote anchorages, or areas with no cellular service.
Installation and setup
This is a portable communicator rather than a fixed 12V or 24V marine electronics module, so it does not need to be wired into the boat’s electrical system. Charge it through USB-C before leaving the dock, then stow it where crew can reach it quickly, such as a grab bag, near the companionway, at the helm, or clipped to personal gear.
For best real-world use on a vessel, keep the communicator where it has a clear view of the sky when sending messages or sharing position. It should not be buried inside a metal locker, under heavy gear, or deep below deck when active satellite communication is needed.
Compatibility and system use
Satellite communication features require an active inReach satellite subscription. Messaging can be handled directly on the device with the touchscreen keyboard, or through a compatible smartphone using the Garmin Messenger app. Route planning and course support are handled through the Garmin Explore app.
This unit is separate from NMEA 2000, NMEA 0183, VHF, AIS, and chartplotter networking. It is better viewed as a personal or crew-carried satellite communicator that complements onboard safety gear rather than replacing fixed marine radios, EPIRBs, PLBs, or primary navigation equipment.
Marine use and care
The IP67 rating helps with spray, rain, wet decks, and washdown exposure, but the communicator should still be rinsed with fresh water after saltwater exposure and dried before storage or charging. Check the battery level before every trip, confirm the subscription is active, and send a test message before relying on it offshore.
This range is a good match for boaters who want a compact backup communication device for passages outside cellular coverage, crews sharing trip progress with people ashore, and skippers who want a portable SOS-capable communicator that can move between boats, tenders, and shore gear.
