Overview

The Garmin 010-02094-00 is a GPSMAP 8700 black box chartplotter that runs a helm display from an external monitor while tying navigation, sonar, and onboard data into one interface. It powers from 10 to 32 Vdc through a 10 A fast-acting fuse and carries an IPX7 water rating for incidental exposure in a marine environment.

This unit has no built-in screen. Video goes out over HDMI to a compatible Garmin marine monitor or a third-party touchscreen, and the processor mounts out of sight in a dry, ventilated space. The housing combines polycarbonate plastic with die-cast aluminum, and the chassis measures 38.3 x 19.8 x 4.7 cm, which helps when planning a tight electronics bay.

Compatibility and display requirements

Plan the system around the monitor you will use. A third-party touchscreen connects with HDMI for the picture and USB for touch control, while Garmin marine monitors can also be part of a Garmin Marine Network station setup so data and control can be shared across multiple helm locations.

Chart and user-data storage is handled with an external card reader (not built into the black box). If you expect to manage charts from the helm, account for the card reader location and cable routing when you lay out the dash and console.

Networking and sonar integration

On the boat, this black box is the hub that lets radar, sonar sources, and mapping data move between stations over the Garmin Marine Network, while NMEA 2000 ties in common sensors and control data. It also supports adding sonar components such as Garmin black box sonar modules and live-sonar systems, and it can share sonar views across the network when the rest of the system is set up for sharing.

For higher update-rate positioning, it can pair with an external GPS 19x 10 Hz GPS and GLONASS receiver. That type of setup is common on faster boats and on multi-helm builds where you want consistent heading and position behavior on every screen.

Installation and wiring notes

Mount the processor where it will not be submerged and where air can move around it, such as inside a console or an electronics locker. Keep space for cable bends and connectors, and avoid stacking it against heat sources since sustained high temperatures can shorten electronics life.

Power is typically run through an ignition or a dedicated helm switch so the unit comes on with the rest of the electronics. When expanding the Garmin Marine Network, keep all networked devices on a common ground and avoid connecting third-party PoE devices directly without the proper isolation hardware.

Use on board

This is a good match for boats that want a clean glass-helm look, refits where you already have a quality monitor, or multi-station layouts where you want the processing hidden and the displays at the dash, flybridge, or cockpit. It is also a sensible choice when you expect to combine navigation with sonar, cameras, and engine data on one touch interface.
