Overview
The Vimar Idea MASTER rotary dimmer is a phase cutting dimmer that mounts flush and runs on 230 V AC, 50 Hz, handling 3-200 W LED loads, 10-200 W CFL loads, 40-300 VA electronic transformers, and 40-400 W incandescent lamps. Its IP40 rating makes it a good fit for dry interior panels rather than locations exposed to spray or washdowns.
This is a practical choice for boats that have a 230 V lighting circuit fed from shore power or an inverter with 50 Hz output, where you want smooth dimming at the switch position. It also supports LED phase cutting electronic power supply units, which matters when retrofitting cabin or saloon lights that use external drivers.
On and off is handled by a built-in push button, while level is set with the rotary control. A minimum brightness adjustment helps you set a stable low end so LEDs do not drop out or flicker at the bottom of the range.
Key features
- Works on 230 V AC, 50 Hz circuits with universal phase cutting control.
- Supported loads: 3-200 W LED, 10-200 W CFL, 40-300 VA electronic transformers, 40-400 W incandescent.
- On and off from the built-in push button, with the option for multi-point control using normally-open (NO) push buttons.
- Rotary control for dimming, plus minimum brightness adjustment for better low-level stability.
- IP40 device rating for protected interior mounting locations.
- Flush-mounted form with snapper mounting and screw terminals for secure connections.
- Visible in darkness for easier location at night.
- Compact body: 24.8 mm wide, 50.1 mm high, 60.4 mm deep.
- Not suitable for installation in Isoset enclosures.
Variants
This dimmer is offered in multiple front colors so it can match the surrounding faceplate and interior finish.
The differences between variants are limited to color. Electrical rating, load handling, and the flush-mount format remain the same.
- VM16603.1: Color Gray.
- Gray blends well with darker helm stations and interior panels, and it tends to hide handling marks.
- VM16603.1.B: Color Ivory.
- Ivory fits light cabin trim and classic switch surrounds where a softer, light finish is preferred.
Compatibility and fit
This dimmer is for 230 V AC lighting circuits, not 12 V or 24 V DC-only systems. Confirm your lamp type and driver or transformer type, then keep the connected load within the supported ranges so dimming stays predictable.
IP40 suits dry areas such as cabins, saloons, and protected switch panels. For spaces that see spray, washdowns, or frequent condensation, place it behind a sealed panel or choose a device with a higher ingress rating for that location.
Installation and setup
Install as a flush-mounted device with snapper fastening, then terminate conductors at the screw terminals with proper strain relief so vibration does not work the wiring loose over time. After commissioning, set the minimum brightness so the lights stay on at the lowest setting you plan to use.
Work on AC systems should be done with power fully isolated and in line with the electrical rules that apply to your vessel and marina connection.
Use on board
This dimmer is a good match for cruisers and liveaboards that want calmer lighting in cabins, galley, or saloon areas on a 230 V AC distribution. It also suits refits where LED lamps or LED drivers are being introduced and you need a dimmer that can handle mixed lighting technologies.
