Overview
The Garmin 010-12550-00 is a 6-foot, 8-pin power/data cable for compatible GPSMAP chartplotters in the 7x2, 9x2, 10x2, and 12x2 series. It supplies power to the unit and also brings out NMEA 0183 data connections so you can tie the chartplotter into older marine electronics that still use NMEA 0183 wiring.
This cable also supports external alert wiring for a lamp or horn, which is useful when you want a visual or audible alarm at the helm, on a flybridge, or in a pilothouse where you may not always be looking at the screen.
Key features
- 6-foot cable length for typical helm and console routing
- 8-pin connector mates with GPSMAP units that use the 8-pin power/data port
- Power and NMEA 0183 data connections in one harness
- Supports wiring for an external lamp or horn for alerts
- Intended for GPSMAP 7x2, 9x2, 10x2, and 12x2 series installations (and other GPSMAP models that use the same 8-pin power/data interface)
Compatibility and fit
Fit comes down to the connector. This cable is for Garmin chartplotters that use the 8-pin power/data connection, commonly found on GPSMAP 7x2, 9x2, 10x2, and 12x2 displays. If your unit uses a different power plug style, this will not seat correctly.
This is a power and NMEA 0183 data harness, not a transducer extension cable. Transducer leads and network cables use different connectors and are not interchangeable with the power/data port.
Installation and setup
Route the cable from the back of the display to your DC distribution point with a drip loop behind the unit and strain relief so vibration does not work the connector loose over time. Keep the run away from ignition wiring, high-current motor feeds, and VHF antenna coax when possible to reduce the chance of electrical noise.
Make splices with tinned marine wire and sealed connectors, then support the harness so it cannot chafe on sharp fiberglass edges or metal brackets. Protect the power feed with the fuse or breaker value specified for your chartplotter installation.
Electrical and system integration
NMEA 0183 wiring is typically used for devices like older AIS, VHF radios, autopilot interfaces, and instrument gateways that are not on NMEA 2000. Plan your talk/listen connections before you cut and terminate wires, and keep joins accessible for troubleshooting later.
If you are using the alert output, mount the lamp or horn where it can be seen or heard in normal operation and choose a location that stays dry. For exposed helm areas, support connections in a protected junction box or inside the console to keep corrosion from creeping into the wiring.
Use on board
This cable is a practical match for a new GPSMAP install, a helm refit, or replacing a damaged harness where the original connector or wiring has been stressed by heat, salt, or repeated service access behind the console. It also fits setups where you want NMEA 0183 integration or a remote alarm without adding extra adapters.
