Overview
The Garmin 010-02251-00 is a flush-mount USB SD card reader that brings two full-size SD slots out to an easy-to-reach spot at the helm for charts, software updates, and ActiveCaptain data transfers.
It fits in tight consoles with a 2 x 2 in face and a depth of 2.4 in (excluding the cable). The housing is fully gasketed and rated IPX7, and it is built to operate from -15 to 70 C.
This is a good match for boats where the chartplotter is mounted in a hard-to-access place or where you regularly swap chart cards and run updates without pulling the display out of the dash.
Key features
- Accepts up to two full-size SD cards for quick access to charts, updates, and data transfer.
- Flush-mount install with a 2 x 2 in footprint to keep the helm clean and uncluttered.
- IPX7 water rating with a fully gasketed, high-impact plastic body for spray and washdowns.
- Runs on 4.75 to 5.25 Vdc with up to 2.5 W max draw (up to 500 mA).
- Compass-safe distance of 21 in (53.3 cm) to help avoid magnetic compass deviation.
- Operating temperature range from -15 to 70 C for typical cockpit and nav-station environments.
Installation and setup
The reader mounts through a single cutout in the dash. Plan for cable routing behind the panel, then cut the opening with a 38 mm (1 1/2 in) hole saw and drill the two pilot holes with a 2.7 mm (3/32 in) bit before securing it with the included screws.
Mount it where you can comfortably insert and remove SD cards. Keep the cable run away from known noise sources, and install the ferrite bead near the connector. For installations using a GPSMAP 9000 series chartplotter, the included USB-C adapter is used at the chartplotter connection.
Compatibility and fit
This reader connects to a compatible chartplotter through its USB connection and relocates the SD card access point to a more convenient spot. Before drilling, confirm you have clearance for the 2.4 in body depth behind the mounting surface and that the door can open without hitting adjacent hardware.
Electrical and system integration
Power requirements are 5 Vdc (4.75 to 5.25 Vdc). The power lead uses an in-line 7.5 A fast-acting fuse; keep it in place and locate it where it stays accessible for service. As with any helm electronics work, disconnect vessel power before wiring and restore power only after connections are secured and properly grounded.
For best results, keep the unit at least 21 in (53.3 cm) from a magnetic compass and avoid running its cable parallel to high-current wiring for long distances.
