Overview
The Garmin 010-01023-00 is a remote-mount card reader that adds two SD card slots in a place you can actually reach, without pulling a display out of the dash. It runs on 10 to 35 Vdc and uses a sealed housing rated to IPX7, so it can live at the helm where spray, washdowns, and vibration are part of the routine.
Cards inserted in the reader are shared across compatible Garmin devices on the same Garmin Marine Network, which keeps chart and software updates from turning into a behind-the-console project. It is not compatible with Garmin chartplotters prior to the GPSMAP 8000 Series and GPSMAP 8500.
For planning the mounting spot, the unit measures 54.3 x 124.1 x 81.2 mm and the compass-safe distance is 915 mm (36 in). Operating temperature range is -15 to 70 C.

Installation and setup
This reader is meant for flush mounting, so it fits cleanly into a dash panel, electronics box face, or nav station bulkhead where you want quick card access. Plan for cable routing behind the mounting surface and keep the door area clear so you can insert and remove cards without fighting a steering wheel or companionway trim.
Because it is a sealed unit, installation quality still matters. Use marine sealant where appropriate for your panel material and keep the gasketed door area free of burrs, dust, and panel flex that can keep the door from closing flat.
Compatibility and system integration
The card reader connects into a Garmin Marine Network using a Garmin Marine Network cable and should be powered from the same source as other devices on that network when possible. It supports 10 to 35 Vdc, which covers typical 12V and 24V onboard electrical systems.
Fit-wise, it is a practical add-on when your compatible Garmin display is mounted where the built-in card slots are hard to reach, or when you want a second access point for chart cards and updates at a different station.
Use on board
This setup makes the most sense on boats running a Garmin Marine Network with compatible GPSMAP systems where chart updates, software updates, or data transfers happen regularly. It is also a clean way to keep SD card access at the helm while the main display stays fully secured in a glass dash.
Maintenance and care
Keep the door and sealing surfaces clean so the magnetic closure can sit flush. After salt spray or washdowns, a fresh-water rinse and a quick wipe around the door opening helps prevent salt buildup from working its way into the seal over time.
