Overview
The Garmin 010-01159-00 is a network sonar module that adds 1 kW dual-channel CHIRP plus CHIRP DownVü and SideVü scanning sonar to a compatible Garmin chartplotter over the Garmin Marine Network. It runs on 10 to 35 Vdc and is rated IPX7 for incidental water exposure, so it fits well in a protected console or electronics bay where it stays dry and has ventilation.
With an appropriate transducer, traditional sonar can reach depths up to 5,000 ft (1,524 m). For scanning, maximum depths are up to 1,000 ft (305 m) on DownVü and up to 750 ft (229 m) to each side on SideVü; actual performance depends on the transducer, water conditions, and bottom type. The module measures 9.9 x 7.6 x 2.6 in (251 x 192 x 66 mm) and weighs 1.7 lb (771 g).
Key features
- True dual-channel 1 kW CHIRP (40 to 250 kHz) for running two CHIRP ranges at once when supported by your transducer
- CHIRP DownVü and SideVü scanning support (CHIRP 455/800 kHz and 260/455 kHz, transducer dependent) for structure and fish below and to the sides
- Maximum depth ratings: 5,000 ft traditional, 1,000 ft DownVü, and 750 ft per side on SideVü (dependent on transducer and conditions)
- Sonar data output over the Garmin Marine Network for use on a compatible networked Garmin chartplotter
- 10 to 35 Vdc input with 27 W maximum power use, and a specified 4.0 A fuse on the power lead
- Fully gasketed polycarbonate case with an IPX7 water rating and operating range from -15 to 70 C
- Compass safe distance of 30 cm (11.8 in) for planning mounting locations
Installation and setup
Mount the module in a location where it cannot be submerged and where air can circulate around it. Leave room to connect the transducer cable, the Garmin Marine Network cable, and the power lead, and keep the status LEDs visible so you can quickly confirm it is communicating on the network.
Power input is 10 to 35 Vdc, which covers typical 12 V and 24 V systems. Keep the in-line fuse in place on the power cable, support the wiring so it does not vibrate against sharp edges, and plan the installation so the unit stays at least 30 cm (11.8 in) from a magnetic compass. On fiberglass surfaces, a light countersink in the gelcoat helps reduce the chance of cracking when the mounting screws are tightened.
Compatibility and fit
The GSD 25 connects to a Garmin chartplotter through the Garmin Marine Network and relies on the display for sonar control and viewing. It is commonly used with networked GPSMAP installations, including GPSMAP 7400/7600 series displays and GPSMAP 8000 Glass Helm series systems.
Transducer choice determines which sonar views are available and how deep you can read. A compatible transducer is required and sold separately, and maximum depth varies with water conditions, salinity, and bottom type.
Use on board
This module is a practical match for boats where you want the sounder hardware off the helm display and installed closer to the transducer cable run, such as larger center consoles, pilothouse boats, and sportfishing setups with a dedicated electronics compartment. It also suits anglers who want dual-channel CHIRP for offshore bottom work while keeping scanning sonar available for reading structure and bait on the way inshore.
Maintenance and care
Periodically check that connectors are fully seated and that cables are still supported after a season of vibration and washdowns. If the unit is installed in a warm compartment, keep vents clear and avoid packing gear tightly around it so heat can dissipate.
