Overview
The Victron Energy Orion-Tr is an isolated DC-DC converter range for regulated voltage conversion between 12 V, 24 V, and 48 V DC systems on boats. These 220-280 W models cover output currents from 6 A to 20 A, with 200 VDC galvanic isolation between input, output, and case.
This converter is used when a vessel has mixed DC voltages on board, such as a 24 V or 48 V house bank feeding 12 V electronics, or a 12 V system feeding selected 24 V equipment. It supplies a stable DC output for compatible loads and is not intended for battery charging.
The Orion-Tr range fits protected electrical spaces such as battery compartments, distribution panels, lockers, and equipment bays where wiring layout, ventilation, and service access matter. IP43 protection applies only when the screw terminals are installed facing downward, so it should not be treated as a washdown or exposed-deck component.
Key features
- Isolated DC-DC conversion with 200 VDC galvanic isolation between input, output, and case, useful for separating DC circuits on board.
- Available 220-280 W configurations for 12 V, 24 V, and 48 V systems, with output current options from 6 A to 20 A.
- Remote on/off terminal can be operated by a low power switch or an engine run/stop signal, without a high-current switch in the input wiring.
- Short-circuit proof models can be connected in parallel when the installation calls for more output current.
- IP43 protection applies when installed with the screw terminals facing downward.
- Screw terminals accept cable up to 16 mm², AWG6, with no special installation tooling required.
- Operating temperature range is -20 °C to +55 °C, with output current reduced at high ambient temperatures.
Variants
This range varies by input voltage, output voltage, and output current. It covers 12 V, 24 V, and 48 V input systems, with 12 V, 24 V, or 48 V regulated outputs depending on the selected configuration.
Output current varies across the range: 18 A for 12 V to 12 V, 10 A for 12 V to 24 V, 20 A for 24 V to 12 V and 48 V to 12 V, 12 A for 24 V to 24 V and 48 V to 24 V, and 6 A for 24 V to 48 V and 48 V to 48 V. The housing size, screw-terminal connection, IP43 installation orientation, galvanic isolation, and temperature rating are common across these 220-280 W versions.
Electrical and system integration
Use this converter where the load requires a regulated DC supply at a different voltage from the available DC bus, or where isolation between circuits is part of the electrical plan. The adjustable output voltage allows the final output setting to be matched to the connected equipment within the supported adjustment range.
Because this is a converter rather than a battery charger, it is better suited to supplying equipment than charging one battery bank from another. For alternator charging or battery-to-battery charging work, a purpose-built DC-DC charger is the correct product type.
Installation and mounting
The unit measures 130 x 186 x 70 mm and weighs 1.3 kg, so the mounting location should have enough panel space and support for the cable runs. Leave room around the converter for airflow, especially in warm lockers or engine-adjacent spaces where temperature derating may reduce available output current.
Install the screw terminals downward when IP43 protection is needed. Keep the converter in a protected area away from direct spray, deck wash, and standing water, and size wiring and fusing to match the selected voltage and current configuration.
Use cases on board
This range suits powerboats and sailboats with mixed-voltage DC systems, refits that add equipment at a different voltage from the main house bank, and installations where electrical isolation is useful between supply and load circuits. It is also a practical option for electronics, controls, lighting circuits, or auxiliary DC loads that fall within the selected model output rating.
