Overview

The Victron Energy ORI121210110R is an Orion-Tr 12/12-9A isolated DC-DC converter for taking a 12 V DC supply and delivering a regulated 12 V output on board. It is rated for 9 A continuous output at 25 °C, 110 W continuous output at 25 °C, and an adjustable 10-15 V output range, making it useful where a clean and stable 12 V feed is needed for a dedicated circuit.

This converter suits boat electrical layouts where a house battery, start battery, or auxiliary DC bus needs to feed equipment through an isolated supply path. The input range is 8-17 V, the nominal output voltage is 12.2 V, and galvanic isolation is rated at 200 V DC between input, output, and case.

The housing carries an IP43 rating when installed with the screw terminals facing downward, so mounting orientation matters in lockers, consoles, and other protected marine spaces. It is a converter, not a battery charger, so it should not be used as the charging device for a secondary battery bank.

Installation and setup

Install the unit in a dry, ventilated location where the screw terminals can face downward and the wiring can be supported properly. That orientation is part of the IP43 protection, and it also helps keep the terminal area better protected from incidental moisture in a boat environment.

The converter uses screw terminals, so no special crimp plug or proprietary connector is needed at the unit. Size the cabling, fuse protection, and routing for the full load and the cable run on the vessel, and keep it away from heat sources, fuel system components, and areas where vibration can work on unsupported wiring.

Electrical and system integration

The Orion-Tr 12/12-9A is a good match for a dedicated 12 V load that benefits from a regulated and isolated supply rather than a direct connection to a shared DC bus. The 8-17 V input range gives it room to handle normal 12 V battery-system variation, while the output can be trimmed between 10 V and 15 V.

Its remote on/off input is helpful on boats where the converter should only run with a helm switch, accessory switch, or engine signal. When disabled through the remote port, current consumption is under 200 µA, which helps reduce small standby loads when the circuit is not in use.

Marine use

This unit fits protected installations such as helm electronics spaces, cabin electrical panels, equipment lockers, and small auxiliary DC circuits where isolation and a stable 12 V output are more important than high current capacity. It is not a charger, so battery-to-battery charging applications should use a charger built for that purpose.

Operating temperature range is -20 °C to +55 °C, with output derating above 40 °C. In warm engine-adjacent spaces or tightly packed panels, leave room for airflow and avoid placing it against surfaces that trap heat.
