Overview
The Victron Energy SCC145110510 is an isolated SmartSolar MPPT RS 450/100-MC4 solar charge controller for 48 V battery banks, built for larger solar arrays where high PV voltage and precise charging control matter. It supports up to 450 VDC PV input, has a 65 to 450 VDC MPPT operating range, starts charging from 120 VDC PV input, and delivers up to 100 A of charge current with a maximum charge power of 5.8 kW at 57.6 V.
On a boat, this unit makes sense for a serious 48 V DC house bank or hybrid energy system where the solar array is split into two independent trackers. Each tracker uses one pair of MC4 connectors and can handle up to 16 A operational input current, giving system designers more flexibility when panel strings face different angles or receive uneven sunlight during the day.
The unit includes Bluetooth for setup and monitoring through VictronConnect, plus VE.Can and VE.Direct for integration with a GX device, system monitoring, data logging, and remote firmware updates. It also has a front display for checking battery and controller status without opening a cabinet or connecting a phone.

Compatibility and fit
This model is for 48 V battery systems, not a drop-in charger for a standard 12 V or 24 V house bank. Charge settings are adjustable, so it can be configured for different battery chemistries such as lead-acid and lithium when the rest of the system, BMS, cabling, fusing, and disconnects are specified correctly.
The PV side must stay within the 450 VDC maximum rating, and each tracker input should be treated as its own solar array input. The controller is not compatible with VE.Smart Networks, so monitoring and integration should be planned around Bluetooth, VE.Direct, VE.Can, a GX device, or VRM where applicable.
Installation and setup
Because the enclosure is rated IP21, this controller belongs in a dry electrical locker, technical compartment, or power cabinet with enough airflow for fan-assisted cooling. It should not be mounted where it can be exposed to washdowns, bilge water, spray, or regular condensation.
The battery side uses M8 bolt connections, while the PV side uses the MC4 inputs on the bottom of the unit. A properly rated DC disconnect is needed between the PV array and the charge controller, and high-voltage PV wiring should be laid out with the same care as any other critical onboard electrical system.
Monitoring and system integration
Bluetooth setup through VictronConnect is useful during installation because the installer can check PV voltage, charge current, battery voltage, tracker behavior, and recent history from a phone or tablet. For vessels with a Cerbo GX or another GX device, VE.Can and VE.Direct bring the controller into the wider Victron monitoring environment.
When the system is connected through a GX device with internet access, the charger can be part of a remote monitoring setup through VRM. That is useful for cruising boats, workboats, and off-grid marine systems where battery charging data, alarms, and charging trends need to be checked without being physically at the electrical panel.
Use cases on board
This controller suits vessels with a larger solar array and a 48 V DC battery architecture, such as cruising catamarans, passagemaking sailboats, expedition vessels, and marine power systems that need more solar input than smaller 12 V or 24 V controllers can reasonably handle.
It is a strong fit when the boat has multiple panel strings, a Victron GX monitoring backbone, and a protected installation space where high-voltage solar equipment can be mounted, cooled, inspected, and serviced properly.
