Overview
The Garmin 010-N2635-02 is a remanufactured GPSMAP 79sc handheld marine GPS that comes preloaded with BlueChart g3 coastal charts and a built-in 3-axis tilt-compensated electronic compass. It uses a 3-inch transflective color display (240 x 400) and is rated to IEC 60529 IPX6 (unit level only) and IPX7 for spray, rain, and accidental immersion.
Power comes from two AA batteries (not included) with up to 19 hours of battery life in GPS mode, and the unit also supports an optional NiMH battery pack. Internal memory is 8 GB (user space varies with mapping), and a microSD card up to 32 GB can be added for extra storage or additional maps.
This is a solid fit for boaters who want a handheld navigator for the cockpit, skiff, kayak, or ditch bag, with chart detail on board and a compass that still reads correctly when you are not moving.
Key features
- Preloaded BlueChart g3 coastal charts plus a worldwide basemap for quick reference away from shore
- 3-inch transflective 65K color TFT display with 240 x 400 resolution for sunlight readability
- Chemically strengthened glass that stays scratch-resistant and fogproof in typical marine use
- Floats if it goes overboard; water rating IEC 60529 IPX6 (unit level only) and IPX7
- Built-in 3-axis tilt-compensated electronic compass for steady heading at rest
- Saves up to 10,000 waypoints and 250 routes, plus up to 300 fitness activity files
- 8 GB internal memory (user space varies) and microSD support up to 32 GB
- High-speed microUSB and NMEA 0183 compatibility, with a serial port under the weather cap for wired connections
Compatibility and fit
The case measures 2.67 x 6.85 x 1.67 in (6.77 x 17.40 x 4.23 cm) and weighs 9.95 oz (282 g) with batteries installed. It is easy to keep on a lanyard at the helm or clipped inside a PFD pocket so it stays with you when you move around the boat.
Charts and navigation
BlueChart g3 coastal charts give you chart detail directly on the handheld, and the worldwide basemap is there when you are outside the detailed chart area. For quick response situations, holding the FIND button marks a man overboard position and starts navigation back to that point.
Electrical and system integration
For day-to-day use, it runs on two AA batteries (1.5 V or lower alkaline, NiMH, or lithium). When you want steady power on board, it can be connected to a compatible 5 V USB power adapter using the included USB cable, and the serial port supports connection to a NMEA 0183 device using a 12 V serial/data power cable (sold separately).
Maintenance and care
Keep the weather cap seated when the ports are not in use, and dry the USB and serial port area before connecting any cable so moisture does not get trapped. After exposure to salt water, rinse the exterior with fresh water and let the unit dry before opening the battery compartment or plugging in accessories.
