Overview
The Garmin 010-10085-00 is a cigarette-lighter adapter cable that powers compatible Garmin handheld GPS units from a 12 V or 24 V DC accessory outlet. It is a simple way to keep a portable navigator running at the helm without cycling through AA batteries during longer runs.
This adapter is meant for handhelds that use Garmin’s round 4-pin power/data connection. Plug the outlet end into a dash-style receptacle (often called a cigarette lighter or cigar socket) and connect the other end to the GPS to run on external power.
Because it is a plug-in cable rather than a hardwire lead, it works well for temporary setups, shared handhelds, or moving a unit between a truck, tender, and the primary boat.
Key features
- Plugs into a cigarette-lighter style DC outlet for onboard power in 12 V and 24 V systems
- Round 4-pin connector for Garmin handheld GPS and GPSMAP units that use this port
- Keeps the GPS powered during long passages and day trips, helping reduce battery swaps
- Quick connect and disconnect for portable navigation setups with no permanent wiring changes
Compatibility and fit
Fit is determined by the GPS power port, not by the model name alone. This cable matches Garmin handhelds with the round 4-pin connector, including many GPSMAP 60, 76, and 78 series units, as well as GPSMAP 176/176C, GPSMAP 196, GPSMAP 295, GPSMAP 96/96C, and several older GPS handheld families such as GPS 12 and GPS 48.
If your unit charges over micro-USB or uses a different Garmin connector style, this will not be the right cable.
Installation and setup
Connect the GPS end first so the handheld is supported, then plug the outlet end into the 12 V or 24 V receptacle. Route the cable so it will not snag on throttles, steering, or hatch edges, and leave enough slack for handheld use on a lanyard or mount.
Most helm outlets are not watertight. For open boats or spray-prone consoles, use a protected outlet location or unplug and stow the adapter when the area is getting washed down.
Use on board
This adapter is a good match for boaters who run a handheld as backup navigation, keep a portable GPS in a grab bag, or rely on a GPSMAP handheld for fishing and cruising but want continuous power at the console. It is also useful on vessels with 24 V systems where a handheld still needs a practical way to run from ship’s power.
Maintenance and care
After use in a salt environment, wipe the cable and plugs with a damp cloth and let everything dry before storage. Periodically check the outlet for corrosion and make sure the connection stays snug so the GPS does not lose power when the boat hits chop.
