Overview
The Blue Sea Systems Medium Duty Push Button Reset-Only Circuit Breaker is a weatherproof thermal circuit breaker range for 15A to 60A circuits where switching is handled elsewhere or not needed. It supports up to 120V AC or 32V DC, uses manual push-button reset operation, and has a trip-free mechanism that cannot be held on during a fault current condition.
This reset-only breaker is a practical fit for main, branch, or 24-hour circuit protection on boats with compact electrical panels and limited mounting space. It is ignition protected for installation aboard gasoline-powered boats, and its #10-32 stainless steel terminal studs help suit it to marine electrical environments where corrosion resistance and secure connections matter.
Key features
- Available in 15A, 20A, 30A, 40A, 50A, and 60A ratings for matching the breaker to the circuit load and wire ampacity.
- Thermal trip operation with manual push-button reset only, so it protects the circuit without acting as a normal on-off switch.
- Trip-free mechanism prevents the breaker from being held on during a fault current condition.
- Rated for maximum voltage of 120V AC and 32V DC, covering common onboard AC and DC protection needs within those limits.
- Weatherproof construction supports use in exposed or damp marine locations such as helm panels, cockpit service areas, and equipment compartments.
- Ignition protected for use aboard gasoline-powered boats when installed in suitable circuits and locations.
- #10-32 stainless steel terminal studs with 30 in-lb torque specification support secure cable terminations.
- Interrupt capacity is 3000A at 120V AC and 5000A at 32V DC, giving clear limits for system fault-current planning.
- Captive star lock washers help meet anti-rotation requirements and reduce the chance of losing small hardware during panel work.
- Meets SAE J1428, SAE J553, UL 1077, and UL 1500 standards.
Variants
This range varies by amperage only, with options from 15A through 60A. The available configurations cover lighter accessory circuits as well as higher-load circuits, while keeping the same medium-duty push-button reset-only format across the series.
Select the amperage based on the protected wire size, the expected continuous load, and the type of load on the circuit. Motor and pump circuits can draw short inrush current at startup, so the breaker rating should be checked against the full circuit design rather than the running current alone.
Installation and setup
The breaker uses #8-32 mounting screw threads and is built for compact panel layouts where several protected circuits may be grouped together. Its push-button face makes reset access straightforward from the front of the panel, while the rear terminal studs keep the wiring connections behind the mounting surface.
Use the stated 30 in-lb terminal stud torque and size the connected conductors for the circuit, overcurrent protection rating, and installation environment. As with any marine overcurrent device, it should be installed where it protects the conductor as close to the source as practical and where it remains accessible for inspection and reset.
Use cases on board
This breaker range makes sense for boats that need resettable circuit protection but already have separate switching at the helm, distribution panel, or equipment controller. It is a good match for protected feeder circuits, always-on loads, and branch circuits where a clean reset button is preferred over a switch-style breaker.
The weatherproof and ignition-protected construction also makes it useful around small powerboats, center consoles, cruisers, and workboats where panels may be exposed to spray, humidity, vibration, and frequent service access.
Electrical and system notes
This is a reset-only circuit breaker, not a switch replacement. It should not be used as the normal way to turn equipment on and off unless the overall system layout specifically calls for that behavior.
Choose the breaker rating so it protects the wiring first, not just the connected equipment. The correct rating depends on conductor size, insulation temperature rating, run length, load profile, and applicable marine electrical standards for the vessel.
