Overview

The Vimar Idea 16557 is a 120 V~ rotary dimmer module for the Idea device system, rated for 30-500 W incandescent lamps and 30-300 VA ferromagnetic transformers (50-60 Hz).

On board, this is used where your lighting is on a 120 V AC circuit, such as cabin or saloon fixtures powered from shore power or an inverter. It is not a 12/24 V DC dimmer, so it will not suit most low-voltage LED lighting runs.

The module is IP40 and intended for protected interior locations. It uses turn-button operation with control via a rotary potentiometer that remains visible in the dark, and it mounts flush with snapper fastening. Housing material is thermoplastic with a matt finish; overall size is 24.80 mm wide, 50.10 mm high, and 58.20 mm deep.

Variants

This dimmer is offered in multiple color configurations to match different Idea plates and surrounding switchgear.

Color is the main visible difference between variants; electrical ratings and the device format remain the same.

• VM16557: Color Gray. A darker face that blends well with gray Idea components and many modern interiors.
• VM16557.B: Color Ivory. A light tone commonly paired with traditional white or cream switchgear; similar to RAL 9001.

Compatibility and fit

This is an Idea series device module meant to be installed with compatible Idea mounting hardware and the appropriate outer plate for your layout. Before ordering, confirm your existing Idea system and the space available behind the panel, and verify the connected load type is either incandescent lamps or low-voltage halogen lighting fed by a ferromagnetic transformer within the stated VA rating.

Installation and setup

This is a mains-voltage component and should be installed by a qualified electrician using marine-appropriate wiring practices for AC systems. Keep the total connected load within the stated range, and avoid using it on loads that are not specified for this dimmer type, such as electronic transformers or drivers that are not rated for phase-control dimming.

On-board use notes

Because protection is IP40, plan placement in a cabin, nav station, or other dry interior bulkhead rather than in cockpits, heads, or other areas exposed to spray or washdowns. It is a good match for boats already using Vimar Idea switchgear and running 120 V AC lighting that needs simple, hands-on dimming at the panel.
