Overview

The Garmin 010-01607-00 is a GPSMAP 276Cx all-terrain GPS navigator that works as a handheld unit or as a mounted navigator at the helm. It uses a 5-inch display with keypad control, carries an IPX7 water rating (up to 1 m for up to 30 minutes), and runs up to 16 hours on the rechargeable lithium-ion battery pack or up to 8 hours on AA batteries.

For boating, you can run the device in Marine mode with the main navigation pages set up for on-water use, plus tools like a man overboard (MOB) quick-mark and alarms for anchor drag and off-course. Mapping support includes BlueChart g3 marine charts, along with other compatible mapping such as Garmin TOPO and City Navigator, so it can move between the boat, the truck, and the dock without changing your workflow.

When it is connected, the unit can handle software updates and weather features through a paired smartphone over Bluetooth and the Garmin Connect app, and some services also work through a Wi-Fi network. It also supports ANT+ sensors for adding compatible external data streams.

Installation and setup

The included powered AMPS mounting bracket with marine bail mount lets you install the unit on a dash, console, or overhead electronics box while still being able to remove it for handheld use. Plan for cable routing that keeps strain off the connector and leaves room to access the battery compartment, since the microSD card slot sits under the battery door.

If you use the mini-USB port for charging or data, keep the weather cap seated when the cable is not connected. Before charging or connecting to a computer after time in salt spray, dry the USB port area and the cap to help prevent corrosion around the contacts.

Compatibility and on-board use

This navigator is a good fit for small center consoles, inflatables, tenders, and skiffs that want a removable GPS at the helm, and it also works well as a backup navigator on larger boats. Load the charts and map products that match your cruising area, and use the Marine mode pages underway for quick access to position, route, and steering information.

If you are tying into existing electronics, confirm what data you need to exchange and match that to the unit interface settings and cabling for your NMEA 0183 setup. For connected weather and notifications, plan on pairing with a compatible smartphone and keeping an internet path available through the phone or a Wi-Fi network.
