Overview
The Garmin GPS 24xd is a GPS receiver and antenna with a built-in heading sensor, offered with either an NMEA 2000 connection or an HVS (NMEA 0183) hardwire interface. The housing measures 3 19/32 in (91.6 mm) in diameter and 1 15/16 in (49.5 mm) tall, and the enclosure carries an IEC 60529 IPX6 and IPX7 water rating for deck spray and incidental immersion.
It tracks multiple satellite constellations, including GPS, GLONASS, Galileo, and BeiDou, and updates position quickly for smooth chart movement. The heading sensor gives a steady heading reference at low speed, which helps when GPS course over ground is not stable in tight quarters.
Mounting is straightforward on a flat surface or a standard 1 in OD, 14 threads per inch pipe-threaded pole. Under-deck mounting is possible under fiberglass (not metal), which is useful when you want the antenna protected from foot traffic and gear on deck.

Variants
This GPS 24xd line is offered in multiple configurations to match how your boat is wired and how you want the antenna to look on deck.
Variants differ by connection type (NMEA 2000 or HVS NMEA 0183) and housing color. White models include the under-deck mounting kit for fiberglass installations. NMEA 2000 models connect as a device on the backbone and are packaged with a T-connector and a 6 m drop cable, while the HVS version uses a longer hardwired cable and ties into power and NMEA 0183 wiring.
- 010-02316-20: Connection type NMEA 2000, color black. This version connects into an NMEA 2000 backbone using the supplied T-connector and 6 m drop cable, with surface or pole mounting on deck.
- 010-02316-10: Connection type NMEA 2000, color white. This version supports surface, pole, and under-deck mounting under fiberglass, and it connects into an NMEA 2000 backbone using the supplied T-connector and 6 m drop cable.
- 010-02316-00: Connection type HVS (NMEA 0183), color white. This version hardwires to DC power and NMEA 0183 wiring, and the power lead is protected with a 1 A fuse for a clean, switchable install.
Installation and setup
Pick a location with an unobstructed view of the sky and away from common interference sources like engines, large wiring bundles, and heavy ferrous metal. If you have radar on board, keep the antenna out of the radar beam path and avoid placing it within 1 m (3 ft) of a VHF antenna.
If you plan to mount under a deck, the surface must be fiberglass since the antenna cannot acquire signals through metal. Route the cable away from high-current runs and ignition components, and leave enough slack to service the connector or wiring without pulling on the antenna base.
Electrical and system integration
On NMEA 2000 systems, the antenna shows up on the network device list and requires heading calibration and auto heading alignment after installation so the heading output matches the boat. If you are using a display that cannot run a menu-based calibration, the basic calibration procedure still works as long as you can view heading data from the network.
On HVS (NMEA 0183) systems, the antenna wires directly to power and the NMEA 0183 talker/listener connections and can feed position and heading data to multiple NMEA 0183 compliant devices. By default it outputs fast updates at 38400 bps, and it can be limited to 1 Hz at 4800 bps using the included update-rate select cable.
Maintenance and care
Clean the outer casing with a cloth dampened with a mild detergent solution, then wipe it dry. Avoid chemical cleaners and solvents that can attack plastic and sealing surfaces, especially if the antenna sits where it gets regular washdowns.
