Overview
The MotorGuide Xi3 is a wireless, bow-mount trolling motor series with electric steer control and a handheld remote, offered in 12V and 24V configurations. Depending on the version, you will see 45 lb thrust on a 12V system with a 48 in shaft, or 70 lb thrust on a 24V system with 54 in and 60 in shaft lengths, along with freshwater and saltwater builds.
GPS and sonar capability varies by configuration. Models with Pinpoint GPS add functions like anchoring, jog moves, and route replay from the remote, and sonar-equipped versions add built-in sonar. The motor also includes a SecureStep stow and deploy system and an LED dashboard that makes it easier to keep an eye on key status lights while you are working the bow.
Key features
- Bow-mount, electric steer trolling motor with wireless handheld remote control.
- SecureStep stow and deploy lever for quick one-step release and lock-in feedback at the mount.
- Available system and thrust range includes 12V (45 lb) and 24V (70 lb) configurations.
- Shaft length options across the range include 48 in, 54 in, and 60 in.
- LED dashboard with four status indicators for power, propeller activity, GPS status, and battery life.
- Pinpoint GPS on GPS-included models supports anchoring, jog moves, and route replay functions.
- GPS-compatible versions can accept a Pinpoint GPS upgrade later.
- Saltwater versions use a treated lower unit for corrosion resistance, along with a composite shaft backed by a lifetime warranty and a three-blade Machete prop.
Variants
This series is offered in multiple freshwater and saltwater configurations, and the main fit differences are shaft length, thrust, and voltage. The range shown here includes a 48 in, 45 lb, 12V option and several 24V options rated at 70 lb with 54 in or 60 in shafts.
Electronics also vary across the lineup, including versions with GPS included, versions with sonar and GPS, and versions marked as GPS compatible. Wireless handheld remote control and electric steer bow-mount operation remain consistent across the Xi3 family.
Compatibility and fit
For bow-mount trolling motors, shaft length is about keeping the prop deep enough in rough water and at speed while staying clear of the hull and trailer bunks when stowed. Measure from the bow mounting surface down to the waterline at your typical load, then consider how much extra margin you need for chop, wakes, and your style of fishing.
Saltwater models are the right match when the boat sees brackish bays, tidal rivers, and coastal runs. Freshwater versions are intended for lakes and rivers where corrosion exposure is lower.
Installation and setup
The Xi3 mounts to the bow deck and needs a solid, flat mounting area with clearance for stow position and full steering travel. Dry-fit the mount to check rub rail clearance, hatch access, and how the shaft sits relative to the bow when deployed.
Plan cable routing so battery leads and any networking or accessory wiring are protected from foot traffic, sharp edges, and standing water. Use marine-grade tinned wire and a properly sized circuit breaker for the motor’s maximum current draw.
Electrical and system integration
Match the motor voltage to your battery system before ordering. 12V models run from a single 12V battery bank, while 24V models require a 24V supply typically built from two 12V batteries wired in series.
If you want control and data on a compatible fishfinder display, integration is commonly done through a gateway that ties the motor into an NMEA 2000 network. Confirm network components and display compatibility when planning a GPS or display-integrated setup.
Use on board
This is a practical fit for anglers who want wireless control from anywhere on the boat and who value controlled positioning at the bow during dock approaches, shoreline work, or holding on a structure line. The 24V, 70 lb configurations suit heavier deep-v and bay-boat style hulls, while the 12V, 45 lb option makes sense on lighter freshwater rigs.
Maintenance and care
Rinse the motor and mount after use, especially after brackish or saltwater trips, and let it dry before covering. Periodically inspect the prop area for fishing line, check mounting hardware for tightness, and keep wiring connections clean and protected from corrosion.
