Overview

The Garmin 010-02908-00 is a wireless man overboard (MOB) and emergency engine cutoff system that monitors wearable tags and can trigger alarms, mark an MOB waypoint on a connected chartplotter, and interrupt engine power when a Captain tag disconnects. The hub ties into your boat wiring and the same NMEA 2000 network as a compatible Garmin chartplotter, which is where you configure tags and acknowledge alerts.

The included MOB tag comes paired from the factory and is set as a Captain tag by default. You can connect up to eight total tags and assign each one a Captain or Passenger role, so the system behavior matches who is wearing it. Passenger tags trigger alarms and MOB navigation prompts without shutting down engines, while engine cutoff is reserved for Captain tags.

For electrical fit, the hub accepts 10 to 35 Vdc and uses an inline 1 A fuse. The hub is rated IPX7 for incidental water exposure, and the tag is rated IPX8 (5 ATM). The hub measures 155 x 92 x 60 mm and draws about 50 mA at 12 Vdc (about 25 mA at 24 Vdc), which makes it a practical add-on for boats running 12V or 24V systems.

Compatibility and fit

This system is meant for boats with an engine cutoff circuit you can access near the helm and a Garmin chartplotter on an NMEA 2000 network. The hub connects to the NMEA 2000 backbone with the included T-connector and drop cable, but you still need an existing backbone or the parts to build one.

It is a solid match for runabouts, center consoles, and small cruisers where the helmsperson moves around the cockpit or deck and wants a tag-based cutoff instead of a lanyard. If your helm area is surrounded by metal or enclosed in a way that blocks wireless signal, plan on using the included external antenna placement to restore reliable tag coverage.

Installation and setup

Mount the hub in a location that stays out of standing water and is not prone to heavy exposure, and keep it accessible so you can service wiring or bypass the system if needed. A vertical mount against a bulkhead with cables pointing downward helps reduce the chance of water tracking into connectors. Avoid mounting the hub inside metal enclosures that can reduce wireless range.

For engine cutoff to work properly, the hub must be tied to the same power source and ground reference as the engine ignition. Power the unit through the included inline 1 A fuse or a 1 A breaker, and route it through an accessory switch because the hub does not turn off with the NMEA 2000 network. If you need to extend wiring, use 18 AWG (0.75 mm²) or larger for power and ground, and 22 AWG (0.34 mm²) or larger for the engine cutoff connections.

After installation, use a connected chartplotter to run the built-in engine cutoff test and buzzer test, and correct any wiring issues before operating the boat. Engine cutoff behavior depends on how tags are assigned and connected, so confirm your Captain and Passenger roles as part of commissioning.

Using the MOB tag on board

Wear the tag somewhere that is likely to become submerged during an overboard event, such as on the wrist, belt, or the lower part of a life jacket. The tag can be disarmed when you intentionally step off the boat or move out of range, and it can automatically return to protected status after a set time.

The tag includes a dedicated MOB button for manually starting an MOB procedure, and on a Captain tag you can hold the MOB button to initiate an MOB action that also triggers engine cutoff. Status and battery level are shown using the tag indicator LEDs, and the battery is a user-replaceable CR2032 3 V coin cell.
