Overview
The Vimar Idea 16358 is a modular RJ45 data outlet and adaptor range for bringing structured cabling to a Vimar Idea wall plate or panel on board. It is used for Ethernet and telecom-style cabling in cabins, nav stations, helm consoles, and equipment panels where you want a clean, serviceable RJ45 connection point.
Depending on the configuration, you get either an RJ45 Cat5 adaptor that matches specific jack families, or a Cat5e RJ45 outlet with universal T568A/B wiring and 8 contacts. Options include unshielded terminations and a shielded Cat5e FTP version for installations using screened cable.
Key features
- Vimar Idea format module for installing an RJ45 connection point into compatible Idea plates and mounting frames
- Cat5 adaptor options for AMP/Tyco JACK 110 series and Lucent Technologies/Avaya/Systimax families (including MPS and MGS series)
- Cat5e RJ45 outlet options with 8-position (8/8) contacts and T568A/B universal wiring
- Netsafe Cat5e UTP versions use insulation-piercing terminals without tool use for faster termination
- Avaya Cat5e UTP versions use insulation-piercing terminals for a secure conductor connection
- Cat5e FTP version is shielded and requires a special tool, matching screened cable installs
- Offered in Gray and Ivory to match common Vimar Idea device colors
Variants
This product is offered in multiple configurations to match the finish and the connector system used in your vessel.
Across the range, the face color varies (Gray or Ivory) and the connector style varies between an RJ45 Cat5 adaptor for specific jack families and Cat5e RJ45 outlets. The Cat5e outlet options differ by termination type and shielding, including unshielded UTP versions (Avaya and Netsafe) and a shielded FTP version for screened cable runs.
Compatibility and fit
These modules are intended for Vimar Idea installations where the wall plate or panel cutout is built around the Idea modular system. They are data connectors, not mains or DC power outlets, and they should be used only for structured cabling runs and patch leads.
If your boat has existing Vimar Idea switch plates around the interior or at the helm, this is the style of module that keeps the RJ45 connection consistent with the rest of the fittings.
Installation and setup
Plan the cable route the same way you would for any onboard network run: keep separation from high-current DC and AC where possible, protect the cable from chafe, and leave enough service loop behind the panel for future re-termination. Maintain the cable twist as close as practical to the termination point, and terminate to the appropriate standard for your network, using T568A or T568B consistently across the boat.
Termination method depends on the configuration. Some versions use insulation-piercing terminals, some are tool-free, and the shielded FTP version calls for a special tool. Once terminated, mount the module into the Idea frame and confirm the latch and port alignment before closing up the panel.
Use cases on board
This is a good match for boats that are building out a wired onboard network for routers, access points, IP cameras, media systems, or an office-style Ethernet drop at the nav station. It also suits refits where the existing connector family needs to be maintained while the faceplate and module style stay consistent with Vimar Idea hardware already installed.
