Overview
The Garmin 010-10931-00 is a magnetic-mount remote antenna made to connect to compatible Garmin Astro and Alpha handheld dog tracking devices when you want the antenna outside and higher up than the handheld itself. The antenna stands 16 inches (40.6 cm) tall and has an 11.5 ft (3.5 m) cable, which gives you room to keep the handheld at the helm or in the cabin while the antenna sits on an exterior mounting spot.
This is not a fixed-mount marine VHF voice antenna for a boat radio. It is a remote antenna accessory for the handheld tracking system, used when your handheld is inside a vehicle or enclosed area and you want reception from an external location.
Key features
- Magnetic base for quick placement on a flat steel surface without drilling
- 16 in (40.6 cm) antenna height for placement above the dash or cabin interior obstructions
- 11.5 ft (3.5 m) cable length to route from an exterior mounting spot to a handheld stored inside
- Made for use with compatible Garmin Astro and Alpha handheld dog tracking devices
Compatibility and fit
This antenna is intended for compatible Garmin handheld dog tracking units in the Astro and Alpha family. Before ordering, confirm your handheld accepts an external antenna connection and that you have a clean cable path from the mounting location to where the handheld will be used or stored.
The magnetic mount requires a ferrous metal surface to hold. Many boats have fiberglass or aluminum tops that are not magnetic, so plan on a suitable steel mounting surface or an appropriate metal mounting plate if you need this style of mount on board.
Installation and setup
Mount the antenna on a flat, stable spot where it can stay upright and clear of overhead snags. On a boat, that usually means a steel surface on a hardtop, tower, or other exterior area where the cable can be routed inside without getting pinched by hatches or doors.
Route the cable with chafe protection anywhere it passes through openings, and leave a drip loop before the handheld connection point so water does not run down the cable toward the device.
Use on board
This setup makes sense when the handheld needs to stay protected from spray at the helm or in the cabin, but you still want the antenna outside for better reception. It is also useful when trailering or driving to the ramp and you want the antenna mounted externally while the handheld stays within reach.
Maintenance and care
Keep the magnetic base and mounting surface clean so grit does not scratch gelcoat or painted metal. If the antenna is exposed to salt spray, rinse with fresh water and dry it before stowing, and inspect the cable occasionally for nicks or flattened sections where it may have been pinched.
