Overview
The Hella Marine NaviLED Compact Stern Navigation Lamp is an LED stern navigation light with a clear lens and a 2 nautical mile visible distance rating for yachts and powerboats. It runs on Multivolt 12V and 24V DC systems and stays lit through battery sag and charging swings.
This is a fully sealed unit with an IP67 rating, built for exposed mounting locations where spray, washdowns, and vibration are part of normal life onboard. Power consumption is less than 2W, and there is no bulb to replace.
Protection is built into the electronics, including spike protection to +500V and reverse polarity protection to -700V. The lens is UV-resistant acrylic that handles sun exposure without turning cloudy as quickly as basic plastics.
Key features
- 2 nautical mile stern navigation lamp with clear lens for aft visibility
- Multivolt 12V and 24V DC operation for mixed charging and battery conditions
- IP67 rated and fully sealed for washdowns and wet transom mounting areas
- Less than 2W power draw to reduce overnight anchor and running loads
- Spike protected to +500V and reverse polarity protected to -700V for added electrical resilience
- LED light source with no filament, built to handle shock and vibration on planing hulls and pounding seas
- UV-resistant, impact-resistant acrylic lens with a high-impact housing for everyday knocks and gear handling
- Approvals listed for this lamp include BSH, IMO COLREG 72, USCG, RINA, ABYC, and Maritime NZ
Variants
This stern navigation lamp is offered in multiple configurations.
Housing color and pre-wired cable length vary by option, while the lamp style remains the same with a clear lens and a 2 NM visibility rating.
- 980520501: Black housing, 120 mm cable. This option suits installs where the connection point is directly behind the mounting surface.
- 980520511: White housing, 120 mm cable. This keeps the wiring short and tidy on white transoms and pushpit mounts with nearby access.
- 980520531: Black housing, 2.5 m cable. The longer lead helps when the wiring run needs to reach a harness, switch panel, or junction area further inside the boat.
- 980520541: White housing, 2.5 m cable. This supports longer routing while keeping the housing color consistent with white gelcoat and deck hardware.
Compatibility and fit
Use this lamp where a stern light is required and where a 2 NM rated fixture matches your vessel category and operating requirements. Confirm you have a clean, aft-facing mounting location that gives the light an unobstructed view, not blocked by outboards, davits, ladders, or dinghy stowage.
Installation and setup
Plan the cable route before drilling so you can keep the penetration protected and supported on the inside. Leave a small drip loop where the cable enters the boat, and seal fasteners and cable pass-throughs appropriately for your transom or rail mounting surface.
Electrical and system integration
Wire the lamp into your navigation light circuit for 12V or 24V DC. The internal protection helps with common onboard electrical events, but it is still good practice to keep connections clean, supported, and protected from moisture and chafe.
On-board use
This is a good match for owners moving from incandescent stern lights to LED to cut current draw and avoid routine bulb changes. It also fits boats that see vibration and impact, such as center consoles, RIBs, and fast cruisers, where filament lamps tend to fail early.
Maintenance and care
Because the lamp is sealed and does not use a replaceable bulb, routine upkeep is mainly a rinse with fresh water after salt exposure and an occasional check that the lens is clean and the cable is still properly supported.
