Overview
The Attwood Marine Adjustable Transom Savers is an adjustable outboard motor support for trailered boats, built to help carry the cantilevered weight of a raised engine while the boat is on the road. The 23 in to 35 in adjustable range helps match the support to common trailer and outboard setups, so the motor is not left bouncing only on the transom and trim system during transport.
This type of transom saver is most useful for boats that are trailered regularly, including fishing boats, runabouts, aluminum utility boats, and small coastal boats with outboard power. The support helps stabilize both the engine and steering mechanism when trailering, which is especially important on rough roads, long highway runs, or repeated launch-and-retrieve use.
Key features
- Adjustable 23 in to 35 in length for fitting the support between the trailer and raised outboard.
- Helps support the cantilevered weight of the motor during trailering instead of leaving the load only on the transom.
- Helps steady the engine and steering mechanism while the boat is being transported.
- Composite motor head with pads gives the outboard a supported contact point without resting directly on bare metal.
- Available with roller mount, trailer mount, or combined roller/trailer mount configurations to suit different trailer setups.
- Works well for trailered outboard boats, including setups with hydraulic trim and tilt where the motor is carried in a raised position.
Variants
This product is offered in multiple mounting configurations so the same transom saver style can match different trailer layouts. The main difference between the variants is the bracket style used at the trailer end of the support.
The adjustable length and general outboard support purpose remain consistent across the range, while the mounting bracket determines how the unit interfaces with the trailer.
- 400-R: Roller mounting bracket. This version is used where the support is intended to locate at the trailer roller area.
- 400-B: Trailer mount bracket. This version is used where a direct trailer-mounted bracket is preferred instead of a roller-based attachment point.
- SP-400-RB: Roller/trailer mount bracket. This version covers both mounting approaches, giving the installer bracket flexibility for the trailer-end connection.
Installation and fit
Before installation, measure the distance between the trailer attachment point and the raised outboard to confirm that the 23 in to 35 in adjustment range fits the boat and trailer combination. The engine should sit securely in the support head, with the trailer-end bracket aligned so the load path is straight and stable while towing.
Because trailers and outboards vary, final fit depends on the roller location, trailer crossmember layout, and the motor position when trimmed for transport. The support should be checked after the first short tow to confirm that the adjustment is holding properly and that the engine is not shifting against the bracket.
Use cases on board
These transom savers are a practical match for boat owners who tow frequently between home, storage, marina, and launch ramp. They are especially useful for outboard-powered boats that spend long periods on the trailer, where road shock and vibration can work against the transom, steering linkage, and trim system over time.
Maintenance and care
Rinse the support after saltwater use or wet ramp launches, especially around the bracket contact points and adjustment hardware. Check the pads, toggles, and mounting points regularly so worn contact parts can be addressed before a long tow.
