Overview

The Attwood Marine 3838-1 is a 12-volt stainless steel vertical sidelight pair for the bow, with red and green lenses, 2 nautical mile visibility, and fit for boats up to 20 meters (65.6 ft.).

It mounts on a horizontal deck or gunwale surface, with the red light on port and the green light on starboard. Each light covers 112.5 degrees for the required 225-degree combined sidelighting arc, and the gasketed base helps seal the installation against water at the mounting surface.

This setup suits owners replacing a conventional incandescent sidelight pair or rigging a 12-volt boat that still uses serviceable festoon lamps and separate port and starboard lights.

Compatibility and fit

This light set belongs on the bow where both fixtures can sit the same distance from the stem and shine straight ahead. It needs a clear line of sight with no rail bases, cleats, anchors, or other hardware blocking the side arc.

Electrical fit is 12-volt DC only, so it matches boats with a standard 12-volt navigation light circuit.

Installation and setup

Mounting uses a 3/8 in. wire access hole and three #6 pan head stainless tapping screws. The wiring layout calls for 16-gauge wire, waterproof crimp connectors, marine non-silicone sealant, and a 1-amp fuse on the positive feed.

The outer cover and lens can be removed for installation and lamp service, which makes routine bulb replacement more straightforward when access is tight at the bow.
