Overview
The Vimar VMV71718 is an 8-module flush-mount box for hollow walls, used to recess a modular switch or outlet bank into thin panels on boats. The box is 138 x 138 mm with up to 56 mm overall depth and about 50 mm internal depth, so you can plan device clearance behind the finish panel.
It mounts into hollow wall materials like plywood panels, laminated boards, and similar lightweight bulkheads. Cable entry is handled through 16 knockouts, including rear entry, and the retention-style knockouts are sized around common conduit runs (16, 20, or 25 mm). The mounting system uses metal fins to clamp to wall thicknesses from 1 to 38 mm, plus metal lugs for the support screws that hold the devices in place.
This is a good match for interior refits where you want a clean, flush look at a nav station, cabin, or saloon panel, and you are routing wiring in conduit or protected looms behind the liner. Since the box is IP00, it belongs in dry locations away from spray and washdowns.
Key features
- 8-module flush-mount box for hollow-wall installations (module layout noted as 4+4)
- Fits within a 138 x 138 mm footprint with up to 56 mm overall depth and about 50 mm internal depth
- Hollow-cutter preparation based on a 68 mm diameter, with a built-in centring plate to help position the cutout
- Metal clamping fins support panel thicknesses from 1 to 38 mm for a secure hold in thin bulkheads and furniture panels
- 16 cable entries, including rear entry, with retention-style knockouts for conduit sizes 16, 20, or 25 mm
- Halogen-free plastic construction with a glow-wire rating of 850 C
- IP00 rating, intended for dry interior spaces
Compatibility and fit
This box is meant for hollow-wall mounting, not solid fiberglass or solid timber where you cannot clamp the fins behind the surface. It is sized for an 8-module device arrangement, so confirm your chosen Vimar modular devices and cover plate are the 8-module format before cutting.
Depth is usually the deciding factor behind helm consoles and bulkheads with tight clearances. Use the 56 mm maximum depth and 50 mm internal depth as your guide when checking for obstructions like stringers, ducting, and existing looms.
Installation and setup
Lay out the opening carefully on the finished surface, then prepare the cutout using the 68 mm hollow-cutter reference and the centring features on the box. Once positioned, tighten the clamping fins so the box locks to the panel without crushing the laminate or liner.
Bring wiring in through the knockouts and keep the run supported so vibration does not pull on the devices. In saltwater environments, using corrosion-resistant fasteners for any mounting hardware around the cutout helps keep the installation serviceable over time.
Environmental and location notes
This is not a sealed enclosure. Keep it inside dry cabins, behind interior liners, or in protected consoles where it will not see spray, dripping condensation, or washdowns. If the mounting surface is in a damp area, address moisture at the panel level first (gaskets, drip loops, and loom protection) rather than relying on the box for water protection.
